Native Title and Aboriginal Heritage Act

This course is designed for Council Officers who are responsible for managing Council land and/or approvals on Council land for works projects or those specifically responsible for Native Title or Aboriginal Heritage issues.
 
Course Overview:
The course is aimed at providing a summary of key issues arising from the Commonwealth Native Title Act and the Aboriginal Heritage Act (SA) and the important differences between them. In particular it will focus on the most common issues arising for Councils.
 
This course will provide participants with an understanding of:
    - what is native title and how might it affect Councils
    - what a Council needs to do to gain approval for a works activity on land where native title may exist
processes under way in many areas of the State to negotiate Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUA) with native title holders and what an ILUA can do
    - implications of the Aboriginal Heritage Act SA for Councils, and appropriate actions on sites where heritage may exist or where items are discovered
    - approaches to dealing with indigenous people or groups who may have an interest in native title or Aboriginal heritage.
