Overview

The LGA Council Chief Executive Officers Forum is a unique opportunity for South Australian Council CEOs to meet with each other and industry experts to discuss the critical issues facing our state.

This year's theme is 'Recovery, Resilience and Change'.

The one constant is change.  As a sector and as leaders, council CEO’s experience perpetual change – as recent events have demanded.  This year’s Council CEO Forum brings together speakers from both inside and outside the Local Government sector to share their stories and their insights about their experience of change in their roles as leaders. It is has been designed as a structured, facilitated conversation amongst high-level thinkers and leaders to consider the successes and challenges Council CEO’s face in their role. It is an opportunity to share perspectives, hear and exchange new ideas, find answers to unsolved problems and to network.

EA/PA Forum

Target Audience

Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants and Senior Administration Officers.

 

Overview

The role of Council EA’s and PA’s has evolved from a traditional ‘duties’ and ‘task’ orientated position into an engaging business partnership. This means there is a greater challenge for council EA’s and PA’s to grow their existing skills, develop new skills and expand their knowledge and understanding of the sector.
 
This forum is about celebrating the evolving role of council EA’s and PA’s, recognising the new meaning and purpose of this valued role and learning how to harness executive focus and positive mind-set.

Elected Member Leadership Forum

The Elected Member Leadership Development Program is a series of professional development opportunities for continuing and newly elected members, designed specifically for the local government sector in South Australia.

'Strategic Thinking as Strategic Seeing’

Overview

Strategic thinking is a key skill of an effective leader. Leaders must be adept at ‘seeing’ themes and trends and envisioning their own, and others ideas to assist them understand potential challenges and opportunities.
 
This forum will offer insights into current leadership research and explore how having an understanding of different perspectives relates to Elected Member leadership effectiveness and enhances strategic thinking.
 

 

Key Learnings

An understanding of ‘strategic thinking’ in the context of a Council’s strategic management planning process
An understanding of ‘shared leadership’
Insight into current research on ‘leadership humility’ and what it means for the Elected Member leadership role
An understanding of the skills a leader requires to be effective in strategic decision making
 

 

Facilitator

Rowena McLean, Sector Development Director, LGA and Dr Chia-Yen (Chad) Chiu
 
Dr Chia is a published researcher on leadership and has worked both in Australia and overseas.  He is a Senior Lecturer at UniSA and takes pride in his approach as a facilitator when it comes to supporting others in learning.

Local Government Volunteer Management Forum

Target Audience

Local Government staff who have responsibilities for the selection, leadership and day-to-day supervision of volunteers, or are responsible for the development, strategic direction and management of a Council Volunteer Program.

 

Overview

Volunteer managers and coordinators play a vital leadership role in driving volunteer programs and providing ongoing support to volunteers through these changing and challenging times.

The Volunteer Management Forums are designed to offer support to local government staff who work with volunteers by developing their skills, and delivering ‘need to know’ information regarding the sector to support their roles.

This years’ theme is ‘Connect - Engage - Transform’. A program for this forum is currently being developed and will be posted on this site when confirmed.

Theme: ‘Strategic Thinking as Strategic Seeing’.
Strategic thinking: "What happens inside a black box, before the planning; a moment of 'creative insight' that connects information together in new ways".
 
Strategic thinking is an important part of being an effective leader. It helps you connect your understanding to what you see and what others see, what is unique, what may present challenges as well as opportunities.
This forum will share some informal insights into some key leadership research, explore how this relates to Mayors\Chairpersons’ leadership effectiveness and with different perspectives how we create greater strategic thinking.
