Overview

In these challenging times of environmental, health, cultural, economic and social changes this two-day course assists practitioners dealing with the tough issues facing our communities now and into the future. Anyone working with communities facing complex challenges such as outreach coordinators, consultants and elected officials would benefit by attending and learning meaningful best practices to assess and address outrage in their public participation.

This course brings together the collective knowledge and experience of outrage management as taught by Dr. Peter Sandman and public participation as practiced by IAP2. It is highly interactive and uses a range of adult education methods including case studies, video clips and the tools and techniques used in public participation.

There is space in this program for personal reflection, group discussion and application of strategies. Participants receive a learning journal to record their reflections and insights and to note what is important for their work.

Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of completion from IAP2.

During this 2-day course, participants will discover:
  • Six practical strategies for managing outrage
  • New behaviours that you can apply immediately
  • A new way of thinking and analysing outrage
  • New ways to plan and implement public participation projects where people are outraged

Key Learnings

This program is designed to help participants:
  • Link meaningful and best practices for public participation with outrage and emotion
  • Understand the principles and concepts of both and how they can work together
  • Understand the differences in the goals and ethics between public participation as practiced by IAP2 and outrage management
  • Develop a common understanding of the foundational concepts and definitions
  • Understand strategies for assessing and addressing outrage and how to plan for it in your public participation program
  • Express specific learning needs and offer time to translate these into practice
