Target Audience

Elected Members, CEO’s, Community Engagement Officers, and Managers in the Community Development, Community Services, Infrastructure, Planning and Development and Strategic Planning areas.

 

Overview

This course brings together the collective knowledge and experience of outrage management as taught by Dr Peter Sandman and community engagement practices as outlined in the LGA Community Engagement Framework and Handbook. The workshop is highly interactive and uses a range of adult education methods including using case studies, tools and techniques used in community engagement, times for personal reflection, group discussion and application of strategies. During this four-hour workshop participants will discover:

12 factors that lead to outrage:
  • Six practical strategies for managing outrage
  • New behaviours that you can apply immediately
  • A new way of thinking and analysing communications for outrage situations
  • New ways to plan and implement public participation projects where people are outraged

 

Key Learnings

This program will assist participants:
  • Link meaningful and best practices for community engagement with outrage and emotion
  • Understand the principles and concepts of both and how they can work together
  • Understand strategies for assessing and addressing outrage and how to plan for it in your community engagement work
  • Fully participate in the training
  • Express your specific learning needs and give you time to translate that into practice

 

Facilitator

Barbara Chappell is the author of the LGA Community Engagement Handbook and the City of Onkaparinga's Community Engagement Handbook which won the IAP2 Core Values Award for Best Policy Framework 2007. Barbara is licensed to train the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Certificate Program and the Dealing with Opposition in Public Participation course.  She has delivered community engagement training across Australia, in Singapore, Jakarta, San Diego, Ottawa and Tel Aviv. She works with Councils and community groups throughout South Australia to raise awareness of community engagement practices.
