Forum Overview - ‘Disability Inclusion Transitioning for Councils’ is an information day on Disability Inclusion Action Planning and the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The day will be delivered in two parts.
1. Disability Inclusion Action Planning:
The Draft Disability Inclusion Bill which will likely be passed by the State Government by the date of the information session will make having Disability Inclusion Access Plans mandatory for councils. While some South Australian Councils already have Disability Inclusion Plans, the majority don’t. The aim of the session will be to hear from local and national experts on their experiences of developing Disability Inclusion Plans.
We will hear from four South Australian Councils in addition to Brisbane City Council, who have recently concluded what is regarded as an ‘exemplar’ Disability Inclusion Access Planning process.
In addition, there will also be an opportunity to explore ’Disability Inclusion Planning – A Guide for Local Government’, which is an excellent guide to Disability Inclusion Planning that has been developed by the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA). ALGA worked with Urbis Consulting to develop the guidelines, and they will be there on the day to walk us through the document.
Also joining us will be Daniel Valiente-Riedl, General Manager of JobAccess, the national hub for workplace and employment information for people with disability, employers and service providers. Learn how employing people with disability is low risk and high return, understand how Australian Government support services work, meet people who live and work with disability and gather examples of good practice to take back to your workplace and your communities.
2. National Disability Insurance Scheme:
Federal and State Governments have already began the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in South Australia, will a full rollout expected by the end of 2018 (see https://www.ndis.gov.au/about-us/our-sites/SA for information on NDIS and the schedule of rollout).
The aim of the session will be to hear from representatives from the Federal and State Governments about the changes that councils will experience as they transition from current arrangements to those planned under NDIS, and to better understand the barriers and opportunities of the scheme.
Representatives from both the National Disability Inclusion Agency (NDIA) and the Disability Policy Unit within the South Australian Department for Communities and Social Inclusion will provide information on the day and will be available to answer questions.
In addition, there will also be an opportunity to explore the linkages between Disability Inclusion Planning and NDIS.
