Council staff and volunteers who provide services wholly or partly to children (under 18 years of age), and for supervisors and managers of those staff and volunteers. Please refer to “Mandatory Reporting- Who needs what training?” Note: Council staff and volunteers providing services wholly or partly to children have legal responsibilities as mandated notifiers under the Children’s Protection Act 1993 (SA).
3 hour “Orientation/Refresher Module” (9:30am to 12:30pm)
Orientation Program: For new Council staff who provide services partly to children incidental to their overall service provision responsibilities, but do likely to have regular or on-going contact with children. This could include managers and supervisors of those providing services to young people, some library staff, swimming pool and recreation and community centre workers.
Refresher Program: For Council staff and volunteers who have completed the one-day accredited training program more than 3 years ago. The Families SA standard is for those mandated notifiers to undertake a refresher program every 3 years.
On completion of this session participants will be aware of:
- The legal and policy framework for a shared responsibility for keeping children safe
- How values, attitudes and experiences may impact on the understanding of child abuse
- The legal responsibility to notify and suspicion of abuse or neglect
- Procedures for reporting to the Child Abuse Report
Note: The morning session alone does not fulfill the requirements of the Families SA one day accredited program. To achieve accreditation participants must also attend the afternoon “Responding to Children Module”.
Margaret Heylen, our program facilitator is a qualified social worker who has worked in the area of child protection, and is an accredited Families SA trainer of the Child Safe Environment modules. In addition to her experience in the area of child protection, Margaret has had extensive experience as a Social Planner in the Local Government and State Government sectors.
This experience encompasses development of LGA Policy and Guidelines for Councils in South Australia. In particular Margaret authored the “LGA Child Safe Environment Guidelines, November 2010” which is available via the LGA website under “Manuals, Codes & Guidelines”.
