Overview

This session is a snapshot of modules 1 & 2 of the Elected Member Mandatory Training.
 
Designed to provide a reboot for elected members in revisiting the key responsibilities under the Local Government Act 1999 (SA). Provides the opportunity for Elected Members to explore experiences of being within the role with others from across the state.
 
Supported by the session facilitators, participants will revisit the expectations of the role and reinforce the behaviours and actions that create greater community confidence in council.

 

Key Learnings

  • Prescribed roles and responsibilities in practice (mayor, elected member, CEO and staff)
  • Clarify expectations in regard to the Code of Conduct
  • Delivering on council’s strategic directions
  • Value in building and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Recap on external bodies and oversight.

Sathish is the Principal in charge of the Norman Waterhouse Employment & Industrial Relations, Insurance, and Governance & Regulatory teams. Sathish has been named as one of Australia’s leading lawyers in Doyle’s Legal Guide for the last ten years and has earned a reputation as one of South Australia’s pre-eminent specialists in the respective fields of industrial relations, local government and administrative law. 

The Norman Waterhouse Local Government team is the largest of its kind in the State and is widely recognised as the leader in the provision of advice and representation to the local government sector in South Australia. 

Rowena McLean, Director Sector Development - Local Government Association of SA
Rowena leads the delivery and continual improvement of the education and training offering to members.  She has twenty years of senior leadership experience in the local government sector, including supporting Mayors and Elected Members across governance and leadership.
 
As a qualified executive coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership (IECL) she also brings a unique combination of skills to support Elected Members in their leadership effectiveness.
