Overview

There has never been a better time than now to develop leadership skills that help build community trust and connectivity. Coaching is well-recognised as a valuable skill for leaders. In this forum participants will learn that coaching is not just about communication, it is about connecting on a deeper level.

 

Key Learnings

This half-day forum is the first session in a three-part ‘skills building’ series for Elected Members. (For further information and to enrol in the 'full series' at a discounted rate please click here.)

This forum will introduce participants to effective coaching models and how to apply them in practice. It will also cover:
 
  • How emotional intelligence and conversational intelligence come together ( whether in an ‘in the moment’ situation or when managing a difficult conversation) and 
  • How coaching can build inter\interpersonal skills and leadership confidence.

Because applying new skills takes time and practice, this program includes a complementary group ‘Coaching Check-in’ (via webinar) allowing participants to share experiences and build confidence when applying coaching skills.

 

Facilitator

Rowena McLean, Director Sector Development - Local Government Association of SA
Rowena leads the delivery and continual improvement of the education and training offering to members.  She has twenty years of senior leadership experience in the local government sector, including supporting Mayors and Elected Members across governance and leadership.
 
As a qualified executive coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership (IECL) she also brings a unique combination of skills to support Elected Members in their leadership effectiveness.

Overview

Strategic thinking is an important skill for an effective leader. Strategic thinkers question the status quo, challenge their own and others’ assumptions and encourage divergent points of view with the understanding that different perspectives offer greater opportunity for a creative vision.

This forum will explore insights into some key leadership research and how this relates to Elected Members leadership.

 

Key Learnings

It will cover:
 
  • Strategic thinking in context of Councils strategic management planning process;
  • The concept of ‘shared leadership’;
  • What ‘humility’ means in context of the Elected Member role in leadership;
  • The qualities needed to be effective in strategic decision making

Through facilitated conversations participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their personal leadership skills with their peers, and share their leadership vision as to how they will be effective before the 2022 elections.

The last decade has seen James partnering with and coaching, Executive leaders and their teams in the often-messy middle of their paradigms and contexts. This important work is focused on discovering new perspectives, shaping direction and developing the subtle yet strong capability required to influence culture by design. James is known as a space creator. Space for insight to be nurtured, artfully held and turned into positive impact for the individual, organisation, and ultimately the communities they serve.

The time to be conscious of your leadership is now.  Considering the current circumstances facing Councils and communities, now is the time to develop leadership skills that will help you build greater resilience and lead your council. This session is an opportunity for Mayors to engage in a personal and professional learning experience with their peers from across the state.
